About the Auxiliary to the Sinkler Miller Medical Association
In 1968, African American physicians living and working in the East Bay region organized and established the Sinkler Miller Medical Association to advance healthcare for African Americans and other minority groups in the Bay Area. Subsequently, in 1979, the spouses of these physicians founded the Auxiliary to the Sinkler Miller Medical Association (ASMMA), with Dorothy Bryant, Shirley Covington, Eunice Jackson, Etna Ford Ross, Hortense Williams, and Mary Thompson as founding members. Their primary objective was to assist the Sinkler Miller Medical Association in addressing the health and wellness needs of the community while striving to encourage young individuals to pursue careers in healthcare. This was accomplished by organizing healthcare career fairs and raising funds for scholarships. To date, the Auxiliary has awarded over $250,000 in scholarships to African American students aspiring to pursue careers in healthcare. After 45 years, the Auxiliary remains dedicated to educating and guiding young individuals entering the medical profession.
The Auxiliary is an affiliate of the Auxiliary to the National Medical Association and the Golden State Medical Association.
